BHOLA: Police and Coast Guards in several joint drives detained 22 fishermen from Bhola’s Char Fashion and Tajumuddin upazilas on Tuesday for catching fish denying the government ban.

A mobile court led by executive magistrate Rezaul Karim punished 17 people among the detainees of one-year imprisonment each.

Fisheries officer Asaduzzaman of Char Fashion upazila informed banglanews that the drive teams detained eight fishermen from Ketua Point, another eight fishermen from Khejur Gachia and five fishermen from Jahanpur from 11:30 Monday to 4:00am Tuesday.

The also seized four trawlers, four thousand meters of fishing net and 25 kg fish.

District fisheries office sources said the Fisheries Department banned to catch fishes from October 5 to 15 from costal areas including Bhola to save mother hilsa fish in the breeding season.
