DHAKA: The cyclonic named ‘Hud Hud’ over east central bay and adjoining southeast bay moved slightly west-northwestwards, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm (ecp 990 hpa) over the same area.
It was centered at 12 noon Thursday about 1,005 kms south-southwest of Chittagong port, 920 kms south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 970 kms south of Mongla port and 940 kms south of Payra port (near lat 13.60 n and long 89.20 e).
It is likely to intensify further and move in a west-northwesterly direction, says a special bulletin sent by Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Thursday.
According to the bulletin, maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the storm center is about 90 kph rising to 110 kph in gusts/ squalls.
Sea will remain high, it added.
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal no ‘Two’.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
However, authorities in India’s southern states are on alert after weather officials predicted a cyclone packing winds of 90 miles an hour would hit parts of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa on the eastern coast this weekend.
