Shirin Sharmin elected CPA Chairperson for 3-yr

DHAKA: Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected the chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) on Thursday. 

She has become the first Bangladeshi as CPA chairperson.

The election had held in Yaoundé of Cameroon Thursday afternoon and the result was revealed in the evening, sources at parliament secretariat in Dhaka said.

Bangladesh National Perliament speaker defeated Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly Speaker Juliana O’Connor-Connolly by 3 votes.  Dr Chaudhury secured 70 votes while her opponent got 67 votes.

With this victory, Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will lead a 35-member executive committee of CPA for the next three years.
