Barisal bus plunge kills 1, injures dozen

BARISAL: A speeding bus in Babuganj upazila fell into a roadside pond late Friday, killing an unidentified man and injuring 12 others seriously.

The mishap occurred in Purba Pangsha area on Dhaka-Barisal highway at 11:00pm when a passenger bus of Grameen Paribahan plunged into a pond after its driver lost control over steering, said Sub-Inspector Abul Kahyer, second officer at Airport Thana of Barisal Metropolitan Police.

The bus was traveling to Dhaka from Amtali of Barguna, he added.

On information, police and Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and whisked off them to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College and Hospital of the district.

The injured are Badal, 26, Monir, 28, Babul Akon, 30, Masum, 50, and Piyari, 60, of Barguna, Mahabub, 26, of Patuakhali, Ramzan, 11, of Bakerganj, Arif, 26, Jhumur, 30, and Bayezid, 11,of Sadar upazila in Barisal,  Abdur Rahman, 55, of Bhola and Yusuf Sardar of Keraniganj in Dhaka.

One of them succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while the rests were undergoing treatment there.
