Student agent business rampant in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (MALAYSIA): Once upon a time Malaysian students used to go to Bangladesh for higher education. Names of Malaysian students were a regular phenomenon in the admission test lists of Dhaka University.

But the scenario has now drastically changed; rather the scene has fully upturned. People from are Bangladesh are entering Malaysia in Student Visa at everyday.

These students can be classified into three categories – progenies of upper or upper-middle class families, who come to study only, from lower-middle class families who want to earn besides reading and finally those who use the ‘Student Visa’ as an entry ticket so that they can work here.

The demand of second and third categories students is more than the first category as the businesses here run centering them.

The chance of falling in the grasp of deceivers is more, though there are some honest agents.

Universities pay commissions to the agents for admitting students. Besides, many agents are earning money by charging students highly. Some universities have more than 200 individual agents.

There are agents who are not affiliated to any companies. They try to draw students through attractive offers on leaflets, facebook pages and twitters.

These private agents try to allure students mentioning about guaranteed work places on their advertisements where the students of diploma and bachelor level do not have permissions.

Wishing anonymity, an agent told to banglanews, “The students also work as agents; the universities know it would be less consuming if new students come through them. Besides, this is also a source of our income.”

He also acknowledged that sometimes they bring students by alluring with false advantages.

“Whoever comes here, wants to work; no one will come if we say there is no chance of working,” he added.
