Ziauddin meets Whitfield

DHAKA: Bangladesh Ambassador to the US Mohammad Ziauddin met the influential Republican Congressman Ed Whitfield, who is also the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Power and a member of the Bangladesh Caucus, at the Capitol Hill of Washington DC Thursday.

External Publicity Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release, signed by Nripendra Chandra Debnath, Director (Media), regarding the meeting.

The release said, “Bangladesh Ambassador briefed him (Ed Whitfield) on the current economic advancements in Bangladesh,” stating that Bangladesh is maintaining over 6 percent growth for more than a decade.

The ambassador also added that Bangladesh is self sufficient in food and has made headway in sustainable production of rice in water logged and saline areas in Bangladesh, it added.

Ambassador Ziauddin also briefed the congressman about the potential connectivity in South and South-East Asia, where Bangladesh would be at the center point to connect the economic powers like China, India and Myanmar.

He also described about the immense initiatives and successes by the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resolve the power crisis in the country.

The Bangladesh envoy furhter briefed the congressman on the trials in the International Crime Tribunal- Bangladesh (ICT-BD) adding that “bringing the war criminals, who committed crime against humanity under justice, will heal the wound of the war and end the culture of impunity”. 

Congressman Whitfield appreciated the immense economic development in Bangladesh. He also welcomed Ambassador Ziauddin in his new assignment and assured him all out support during his stay in the United States.

Nayem Uddin Ahmed, Counselor Political of the Embassy accompanied the Ambassador during the meeting.
