DHAKA: The High Court on Sunday granted four-week anticipatory bail to ex-MP of Jessore-5 Tipu Sultan and his wife Dr Jesmin Ara Begum in a case filed against them on allegation of killing of their daughter-in-law Dr Samaruk Mehjabeen.
A HC bench comprising Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Haq and Justice M Akram Hossain passed the bail order.
Lawyer Nurul Islam Sujan moved for Tipu and his wife.
Earlier in the morning, their son Humayun was placed on a 3-day remand who was detained on Thursday over same allegation.
The victim’s father, a retired engineer Nurul Islam, filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Thana against Humayun, his father and mother, also a physician Jiasmin Akhtar, following the death.
Nurul alleged that his daughter was beaten to death. However, Tipu Sultan’s family claimed that she had committed suicide.
Mehjabeen, at 2:00pm on the day, was rushed to Central Hospital in city’s Dhanmondi area where the on-duty doctor pronounced her dead.
It was claimed that the victim had committed suicide by wrapping ‘orna’ (a piece of cloth) around her neck at their house on Road 6 at Dhanmondi.
Mehjabeen completed MBBS degree from Holy Family Medical College, where her mother-in-law is a doctor.
