Latif Siddique sent to jail

DHAKA: Former post, telecommunications and ICT minister Latif Siddique was sent to jail on Tuesday afternoon in a case related to hurting religious sentiment.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court Judge Atikur Rahman passed the order after police produced Siddique before the court following his surrender at Dhanmondi Thana.

Siddique, however, did not seek bail and police also sought no remand.

Earlier, the former Awami League presidium member surrendered.

Assistant police commissioner of Ramna Zone Shibli Noman confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Dhanmondi Thana duty-officer Jahangir Alam told banglanews that Siddique himself informed Abu Bakar Soddique, officer-in-charge, about the surrender over cell phone 11:30am.

Later, Siddique surrendered at the thana at 1:30pm and he was taken to the court by police vehicle, he added.

Latif made derogatory remarks on hajj and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in New York on September 28.

On October 12, the AL removed Latif from its presidium and suspended his primary membership of the party following his derogatory remarks on hajj and Hazrat Muhammad (PBUP).

On the same day, Latif was sacked from the Sheikh Hasina-led cabinet.

Several arrest warrants against Abdul Latif Siddique were issued by several courts of the country in several cases filed for hurting Muslims' religious sentiments.
