DINAJPUR: The Phulbari unit of National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports has barricaded Dhaka-Phulbari highway in Nimtala Mor and Dhaka Mor area on Thursday morning for second consecutive day.

The strikers blockaded the area by piling rickshaws and vans on the highway protesting entrance of Gary N. Lye, the chief of operation of Asia Energy, the implementer of Phulbari Coal Mine Project.

Confirming the matter, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Maniruzzaman said that the protesters gathered at the place on information of the Asia Energy operation chief’s visit to Phulbari and the activities started to implement the Phulbari Coal Mine project.

Earlier, the ‘National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports’ of Phulbari unit also blockaded the highway on Wednesday, said Phulbari Thana officer-in-charge (OC) ABM Rezaul Islam.

Later, according to him, the protesters left the place in the afternoon after being assured by the UNO that Gary N. Lye told him the company would not start any implementation of Phulbari Coal Mine Project.
