Nisha calls to strengthen democracy

DHAKA: US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal on Friday called for strengthening democracy to enhance the economic and social development in South Asian region.

Nisha made the call while holding a meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, which started at Khaleda’s Gulshan political office in city around 6:05pm and ended around 7:00pm.

At the meeting, they discussed different important issues related to the bilateral interest of Bangladesh and United Sates and social-democratic development in South Asia.

BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury briefed the journalists after the meeting. 

“She (Nisha) told Kahleda that the USA administration maintains a political relation with BNP for long time and it will be longer (in future),” Mobin said quoting the US assistant secretary.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan Mozena accompanied Nisha at the meeting. Senior BNP leaders including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khaleda's advisors Riaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were also present there.

Nisha arrived in the city on Thursday evening as a part of her visit to South Asia to go to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan and Switzerland from November 23 to December 5.
