KUSHTIA: A leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) (ML-Janajuddha) was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Battola area Mirpur upazila of the district early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Enamul Haque, 35, a regional leader of PBCP, son of Robiul Islam of Asan Nagar village of the upazila.
Police sources said an gang of outlawed party came to a brick kiln in the area to collect extortion. Tipped-off, police took position there. Sensing the lawmen’s presence, the extremists began firing; then police retaliated with gunshots, triggering a gunfight.
After nearly 40 minutes of firing, the extremists fled the scene.
Later, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Enamul on the spot including a locally made pistol, three rounds of bullet, and a big-size knife.
Confirming the matter to banglanews, Mirpur Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Kazi Jalal Uddin said the body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Enamul was accused in 24 cases including killing, robbing, kidnapping, arms and extortion with Mirpur, Meherpur, Gangni and Alamdanga Thanas, added the OC.
