Mamata keen to develop river communication with Bangladesh

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is keen to develop waterway communication with Bangladesh aimed at boosting the trade and economy.

She expressed her interest in this regard while visiting Sundarbans with government official on Tuesday (December 9).

Mamata asked the officials concerned to contact with concered officials of Bangladesh Government on the matter.

Some politicians, including Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee, Industrialists, bureaucrats, poet, litterateur and artists accompanied the chief minister in the tour. She returned Kolkata on Wednesday.

Currently, Indian and Bangladesh waterways connect West Bengal and Assam states and Inland Waterways Authority of India and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority are operating vessels on these routes.
