CHITTAGONG: A wild elephant killed three people, including a child, in Nayakhaler Matha area of Keonchiya union at Satkania upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Mahbubul Alam Talukder, 45, son of a late Abul Hossain Talukder of the area, Mohammad Shakil, 13, son of Mohammad Forkan of Dheki Para under Kaliaish union and Shahadat Hossain, 26, son of Ameer Hossain of Marfala village in Nalua union.

Keonchiya Union Parishad Chairman Nur Hossain said a herd of wild elephants came down from Bajalia Hill and they were trying to damage crops.

He added: “When the locals were trying to stop them from destroying the crops, an elephant of the herd got furious and attacked the people, leaving Mahbub dead on the spot.”

However, two more villagers were stampeded under the elephant’s legs, said the UP chairman.

Later, they succumbed to their injuries on the way to Upazila Health Complex, he added.
