DHAKA: At least six people, including a woman, were killed and 10 others injured as a freight lorry hit a train at Kamalapur area in city on Monday noon.
Of the deceased, three were identified as Nayeem Islam, 15, son of M Yunus of Bakerganj upazila under Barisal district, Mujibur Rahman, 50 and Alamgir, 35.
Witnesses told banglanews that the accident took place around 1:00pm in front of Kamalapur Container Depot.
Government Railway Police (GRP) Kamalapur Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Majid said that a cargo truck knocked a Dhaka-bound train from Narayanganj down while it was entering Kamalapur Railway Station, leaving two people dead on the spot and 13 others, including a member of Bangladesh Ansar, injured.
Later, four others succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said deputy director of the hospital Dr Mushfiqur Rahman.
The injured Mizanur Rahman, 45, Babul, 30, Nasir, 25, Mostafa Prodhan, 25, Alamgir, 50, Billal, 25, Jinnah, 35, Kalam, 27, Jabed, 45, and Harun, 40 are undergoing treatment at the DMCH.
Immediate after the accident, police, RAB, Ansar personnel rushed in and started conducting rescue operation to clear the rail track. DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed also visited the spot around 3:10pm.
On the other hand, railway minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot and monitored the rescue operation.
In response to a query on signal, Railway DIG Mollik Fakhrul said the matter is being investigated.
Meanwhile, the government formed a 3-member committee to look into the accident.
