Two young tourists have died and three others have been injured after going missing while exploring a hilly trail in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram.
The deceased were identified as Galib, 22, from Satkania, and Hridoy, 22, from Dhaka. Both were students of the Mechanical Department at Feni Polytechnic Institute.
The injured were identified as Md Miraj, Raihan, and Fahim.
According to police, the accident took place on Wednesday afternoon (July 9) at the Melkhum Trail in Sonapahar area under Jorarganj union.
Baraiyarhat Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Senior Officer Zainal Abedin Titas said the five friends entered the trail on Tuesday morning. Three of them travelled from Feni and were later joined by two locals. When they did not return overnight, a search operation began on Wednesday morning.
Rescue teams recovered three injured tourists around 2:30pm and took them to a local hospital. The bodies of Galib and Hridoy were found later in the afternoon around 5:00pm.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two students from the University of Chittagong drowned while swimming at Himchhari beach in Cox’s Bazar. Another student remains missing.
The deceased were named as Sadman Rahman Sabab and Asif Ahmed. All three were first-year students of Development Studies in the 2023–24 session.
They went missing on Tuesday morning while bathing in the sea. Sabab’s body was recovered the same day. On Wednesday morning, Asif’s body was found in the Samitipara area of the beach.
Search efforts are ongoing to locate the missing student, Aritra Hasan.
