GAIBANDHA: Over 150 vehicles were vandalized in attacks in Palashbari upazila of the district from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, the first and second day of the nationwide indefinite rail-road-waterway blockade, called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

Sources told banglanews that the vandalism took place on Dhaka-Rangpur highway.

Moreover, some goods-laden trucks overturned at that time after being chased by the picketers.

Kabir Mia, driver of an overturned truck, said that they were chased by the alliance people, who were enforcing blockade in Palashbari area throwing brick-chips on them around 2:00am.

“We were going to Dhaka from Nilphamari,” he added. “The attackers were throwing the brick-chips like rains and that lead the truck to be overturned.”

The picketers, however, also beat some of the drivers and helpers, who came out from the overturned vehicles.

Palashbari Thana Officer-in-Charge Mojibur Rahman said that police later brought the situation under control and were trying to pull up the vehicles which had plunged into the roadside ditch.
