Jamaat leader dies in gunfight

RAJSHAHI: A leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a gunfight with police early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam Shahin, 45, secretary of No. 30 ward Jamaat, wanted in eight cases and accused in 13 cases.

In a press briefing at noon, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shamsuddin said, Shahin was arrested at 9:00pm Tuesday. Later his cohorts, other Shibir activists, attacked police and snatched him from Nolkhola area when police was going to conduct a drive taking him with them.

To take the situation under control, police opened gun fire that left Shahin injured. He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctor declared him dead, the commissioner added.

Two police constables were injured in cocktail attack by Shibir men and police seized a revolver, ten cocktails and 5 rounds of bullets.
