Workers’ clash kills 2 in Sylhet

DHAKA:  Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a clash between two groups of workers in Dakkhinbazar area of Beanibazar Upazila on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as workers’ leader, Abul Kalam, 40, also a restaurant owner and son of Shajahan of Mollapur village and vegetable trader Niju Mian, 18, son of Sebul Mian of Kasba village of Beanibazar Upazila.

Five of the injured are Soabur Rahman, 40, a workers’ leader, Faysal Ahmed, 35, Nurul Haque, 50, Bimal Chandra, 32, Ripon Ahmed, 29, and Tarek Ahmed, 24. 

All of them sustained bullet injuries and were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital

Local sources said the two groups of workers had a longstanding dispute over the possession of CNG Auto-rickshaw Stand in the municipality. Disputed groups had a meeting on Friday night in mediation of upazila Chhatra League leader Jamal Ahmed.

Tension prevailed among the workers at the meeting, triggering a clash there that lasted for about half-an-hour. Both groups traded fire during the clash that left 12 people injured.

The inured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctor declared Niju Mian dead while Abul Kalam succumbed to his injuries on way to Osmani Medical College and Hospital.

Beanibazar Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Zuber Ahmed confirmed the matter to banglanews.

 Meanwhile, police detained a man from the municipality area around 2:00am in this connection, said the OC.
