Jamaat man killed in Jessore ‘gunfight’

JESSORE: An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami, who fled from police custody on Thursday afternoon, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Picnic Corner area of Ramnagar under Sadar upazila of the district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, son of late Nur Ali Sana, of Sadar Upazila and nephew of district Jamaat Ameer principal Abdul Khaleque.

Three policemen also sustained injuries during the gun battle held around 2:00am on Jessore-Khulna highway.

On the other hand, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Kolaroa poura unit president, who also fled from police custody, sustained bullet injuries in another ‘gunfight’ with police in Thakurbari area of Satkhira Sadar upazila at 1:30am.

The injured, Abdul Majid, was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Jessore police superintendent Anisur Rahman told banglanews that police tried to stop a microbus as it had no registration number around 2:00am, but youths boarded the vehicle opened fire targeting police. On self-defense, police also fired back that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, 12-14 youths fled the spot with microbus but left a bullet-hit man on the highway.

The injured was taken to Jessore 250-bed general hospital where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead at 3:00am.

The injured policemen are constables Akhter, Shahid and Monir.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jamaat activist Shahidul Islam along with JCD leader Abdul Majid was arrested from Kaiba-Badamtala area of Sharsha upazila of Jessore district, said Soumen Biswas Assistant sub-inspector (ASI).

Later, the arrestees fled from the police custody on Thursday afternoon while they were taken to the Jessore Court.

Following the matter, ASI Soumen, Constables Mahmudur Rahman and Rabindranath have been closed and posted at the police line.
