Subhan to appeal against ICT verdict

DHAKA: Convicted war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdus Subhan will appeal challenging the International Crimes Tribunal’s death penalty for his crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

His lawyers and relatives disclosed it in an instant reaction after the pronouncement of verdict.

A three-member panel of ICT-2 led its chairman by Justice Obaidul Hassan sentenced Subhan to death on Wednesday morning.

Subhan’s son Nesar Ahmed, in a reaction following the verdict, claimed that his father is innocent and being victimized by political foes.

They will appeal to the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict, Nesar said.

Shubhan’s lawyer Shishir Muhammad Monir said that they are aggrieved and disappointed by this verdict. There are many legal faults in placing depositions before the tribunal in the case, claimed the lawyer.

Shishir also told journalists that they will appeal to the Higher Court changeling the verdict.

“Hopefully, we will get justice and he (Subhan) will be acquitted”, said the lawyer.
