DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina categorically said that a vested quarter in the country wants to confine women using the religion.
The PM made the comment while inaugurating the programs of International Women’s Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in city on Sunday.
She said a section of religious groups wants to keep women confined in houses in the name of Islam.
But many people forget that Islam has ensured the equal rights of women, the premier added.
Upholding the spirit of Islam, she asserted that the religion did not impose any barrier for the development of women. People, who are trying to create obstacles, remain their eyes closed to the proper understanding of Islam.
Mentioning the name of Hazrat Khadiza (R), the first converted Muslim, the PM said that she (Khadiza) was a woman.
Even then, the first martyr of Islam was a woman too, she added.
The premier opined that a nation can develop following the equal development of men and women in every sector.
Moreover, Sheikh Hasina, at her address, presented the employment of women in several sectors including education, judiciary, defense forces and banking in the country.
The PM also criticized the ongoing political crisis sponsored by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Bangladesh country representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Argentina Matavel Piccin attended the event chaired by state minister for women and children affairs ministry Meher Afroze.
