DHAKA: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was killed and a constable injured when a truck ran over them while discharging duty in the city’s Khiakhet Bazar area early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as ASI Al Amin, 32 while the injured was constable Shajahan, 40, of the city’s Khilkhet Thana.

Khilkhet Thana operation officer ASI Monirul Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Monirul said a police team including Al Amin and Shajahan was on night duty, riding a police van. At around 3:30am, they got down from the vehicle and stood on Airport Road of the area.

All of a sudden, a speedy truck appeared and hit them, leaving two policemen severely injured.

The injured were rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital. As the condition deteriorated, Al Amin was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead around 3:50am.

Shajahan, however, underwent treatment at Kurmitola Hospital.

Khilkhet Thana ASI Sabuj told banglanews24 that police seized the truck and detained one and took him to the Thana.

The ASI, however, could not clarify whether the detainee is the driver or the helper of the truck.
