War crimes charges against 8 in Jamalpur

DHAKA: The investigation department of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday published the final report bringing war crime charges against eight persons, including Ashraf Hossain of Jamalpur, one of the founders of anti-liberation paramilitary force Al Badr Bahini.

The accused are Ashraf Hossain, 64, Prof Sharif Ahammed, 71, Abdul Mannan, 66, Abdul Bari, 62, Harun, 58, Abul Hashem, 65, Shamsul Haq alias Badar Bhai, 75 and SM Yusuf Ali, 83.

The report will be submitted to the tribunal prosecution shortly to prepare formal charge in this connection.

Chief coordinator of the investigation department Abdul Hannan Khan briefed the journalists about the report at Dhanmondi Safe Home in city.

The 10 war crime charges brought against them include killing, mass killing, rape and arson under the sections 3 (1), 4 (1) and 4 (2) of International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973.

The report said the accused killed around 10,000 people, raped innumerable women and looted and set fire to 75,000 houses in the then Jamalpur Mahkuma from April 22 to December 11 of 1971.

Senior convener Sanaul Haque and investigation officer of the case, former superintendent of police and also the deputy director of investigation department Matiur Rahman, among others, were present at the press meet.
