NOAKHALI: An activist of Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, died after falling down a drain during a clash with law enforcers in Maizdi area of the district town on Monday.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The incident took place at 11:15am hours after the Supreme Court order that upheld death penalty of its leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman rejecting his review petition.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sudharam Thana Anwar Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.
He said the Jamaat-Shibir leader and activists tried to bring out a procession protesting the rejection of Mohammad Kamaruzzaman’s review petition.
Being obstructed, Jamaat-shibir men attacked the law enforcers. Police, on self defense, fired blank shot to disperse them that left five people injured.
While fleeing the spot, a Shibir man sustained severe injuries after falling down a drain and died on the spot.
Police recovered the body and sent to the Noakhali Medical College and Hospital for autopsy and other injured were given treatment in the hospital.
Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty to war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman rejecting his review petition.
The four-member bench of The appellate division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha pronounced the verdict on the review petition filed challenging the death penalty for the war crimes convict.
