Gibson disappointed as BNP quits city polls

DHAKA: The British High Commissioner Robert Gibson on Tuesday afternoon expressed his disappointment over BNP’s decision to withdraw its candidates from the city corporation elections partway through the voting.

He however hoped that the decision would not lead the situation to violence in Dhaka and Chittagong within the next few days, says a press release issued by the British High Commission in Dhaka.

Gibson also said all parties must ensure that their response to today’s events remains within the law.

The release also said it will be important that all allegations of irregularities are investigated swiftly and impartially.

The responsibility remains with all parties, the Election Commission, and law enforcement agencies, to ensure that elections can take place in an ordered atmosphere to allow all voters the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.

Those candidates who are successful in being elected should seek to serve the needs and wishes of all the voters in both cities, it added.
