DHAKA: The government, for the first time, has banned fishing in country’s Bay of Bengal economic region from May 20 to July 23 for breeding and reserving marine biodiversity.
Fisheries and Livestock minister Mohammed Sayedul Haque made the announcement on Tuesday in a press briefing at Matsaya Bhaban in city.
He said food is essential for living, but fish is also important for nutrition. It is also a sector of employment. So, the government has put emphasis on the preservation of country’s fisheries resources.
According to the minister, fishing remains banned in the coastal countries including India between two and three months for sea fish breeding.
So, the government took the decision to increase marine fisheries resources, the minister added.
He further said the decision came from a meeting, held on Monday, with the members of Marine Fisheries Association, Marine White Tonner Association, Marine Fisheries Ex-Cadet Association and the specialists.
