DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s niece Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Labour’s new MP for Hampstead and Kilburn in the United Kingdom (UK), sought cooperation from people of her constituency to perform her duties as their representative.
Tulip, also grand-daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, came up with the urge in her victory speech in the early hours of Friday morning, outside the election count center.
The 32-year-old Labour Party politician said, “I got tough task. You will have to continue your co-operation to perform my duties properly."
Meanwhile, more than one hundred British Bangladeshis were seen waiting outside the vote counting center station during the night.
Tulip, who lives in Finchley Road, was announced victor in Hampstead and Kilburn by a margin of 1,138 votes over Conservative Party candidate Simon Marcus in the early hours of this morning.
Tulip, a former Camden Council cabinet member, secured 23,977 votes while her nearest opponent Simon got 22,839.
Tulip’s mother Sheikh Rehana, her brother Rizwan Siddiq Boby, her sister Rupanthi, UK Awami League unit general secretly Sayed Faruk, and joint secretary Anwaruzzaman, among others, were present there during the announcement.
Addressing onlookers at the election count, she also said: “I’m absolutely honored to be standing here as the elected MP for Hampstead and Kilburn. I want to start by thanking everyone who participated in this election.
“Whether you put your faith in me and voted for me, whether you stood in the rain and leafleted for hours on end, whether you spent every weekend knocking on doors for me, this is the reason why I won so thank you.”
“This is the constituency in which I’ve grown up, where I went to school, where my parents got married in the 1970s, where I used to write for my local paper. Hampstead and Kilburn is my home which is why I’m proud to represent Hampstead and Kilburn in parliament.”
“By voting for me you have shown that you put faith in Labour values - values of fairness, of social justice, of equality, values about protecting our public services, about making sure we keep the NHS and making sure we look after those who are vulnerable.
“An economy that works for everyone, not just for a few”, said Tulip.
