Teesta water flow above danger mark

NILPHAMARI: The river Teesta is flowing above danger level due to the surge of upstream water, inundating 10 villages in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas of the districts.

Since 6:00am Monday, water at Teesta Barrage Dalia point has been flowing 12 centimeters above the danger mark.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has kept open all 44 gates of Teesta Barrage to bring the flood situation under control.

Local representative said Pubachhatnai, Khagakharibari, TepaKharibari, Khalia Chanpani, Jhunagachh Chanpani and Goyabari villages of Dimla upazila and Golmunda, Dauabari, Shoulmari and Koimari villages of Jaldhaka upazila were inundated due to onrush of upstream water in Teesta river.

According to BWDB Dalia division executive engineer Mostafizur Rahman, only two millimeter rainfall has been recorded in past 24 hours at Dalia Point of Teesta river basin.

However, the area has been flooded since morning due to surge of upstream water and heavy rainfalls in uphill areas.

Dalia’s Water Development Board Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre sources said Teesta water had been flowing above 22 centimeters for three days from June 13. Then the water crossed danger mark and flowed above 22 centimeter on June 19.
