Order on contempt charge against Zafrullah Sunday Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury

DHAKA: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) -2 has fixed July 12 (Sunday) to deliver the order on the contempt charge against Gana Sasthya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury.

A three-member tribunal, led by its chairman Justice Obaidul Hasan fixed that date as hearing on petitions of five including three freedom fighters ended on Tuesday.

Barrister Khan Mohammad Shamim Aziz and petitioner Manoranjan Ghoshal participated in the hearing for the petition.

Earlier on July 6, a petition was filed to bring contempt of court charge against Dr Zafrullah for terming three judges of International Crimes Tribunal-2 as ‘mentally sick’.

Three freedom fighters and a faction of Gonojagoron Mancha filed the petition against Dr Zafrullah. The petitioners included Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artiste Manoranjan Ghoshal, freedom fighter Sheikh Nazrul Islam and Ali Asgar and convener of a faction of Gonojagoron Mancha Kamal Pahsa Chowdhury and activist FM Shahin.

Lawyer of the petitioner Barrister Khan Mohammad Shamim Aziz placed the petition through tribunal registrar.

Manoranjan Ghoshal said that Zafrullah’s comment on the judges and the tribunal is derogatory. It has tarnished the image of the tribunal.

On June 10, ICT-2 sentenced Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, one of the 23 noted citizens who published a statement over the conviction of Dhaka-based British journalist David Bergman, one-hour jail and fined Tk 5,000 for contempt of court acquitting the 22 others.

Later, he served one-hour imprisonment from 12:49pm-1:49pm but declined to pay Tk 5,000 fine.

However, prior to that, Dr Zafrullah argued and misbehaved with the judges and said, ‘You (tribunal judges) misused your power’.

After serving the sentence, he also termed the tribunal judges as ‘mentally sick’.
