DHAKA: Bangladesh branch of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Ansar-al-Islam, an extremist outfit, claimed credit for the murder of blogger Niloi Neel.
An alleged spokesperson of Ansar-al-Islam, Mufti Abdullah Ashraf, came up with the claim in an e-mail message sent to several media Friday afternoon.
The e-mail said, “Alhamdulillah! Mujahidin of Ansar-Al-Islam (AQIS, Bangladesh Branch) carried out an operation to slaughter an enemy of Allah (swt) and His Messenger (peace & blessings be upon him), whose name is Niloy Chowdhury Neel.”
However, the credibility of the e-mail could not be confirmed immediately.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner (DC, Media) Muntasirul Islam told banglanews that they heard about the e-mail, but yet to be confirmed about it.
“We have been investigating the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, Muntasirul Islam also said they would take actions against the police officials guilty of not filing general diary (GD).
He came up with the observations when it was learnt that police advised blogger Niloy Neel to leave the country instead of filing GD after he had gone to file GD with two thanas -- Khilgaon and Shahjahanpur -- in city feeling insecured.
Miscreants killed Niloi, 40, in his flat, where he lived with his wife and sister, at Khilgaon area of the city at noon.
