Students’ Anti-VAT demo, commuters’ sufferings

DHAKA: Students of the private universities have resumed their anti-VAT protest program since Monday morning, putting road blockades at some city key points.

Hundreds of students are protesting at Rampura, Kakal-Banani, Uttara the imposition of value added tax (VAT) on their tuition fees, halting traffic movement.

Banglanews correspondents from spots report:  students of private universities including East West University have been staging protest programs in city’s Rampura area, taking positions on the streets since 10:30am.

Students of World and Dafodill University, are staging in front of their respective university campuses from 10:30am, creating huge traffic congestion in both sides.

AIUB, presidency, Royal, Atish Dipangkar, Northern University students blocked road in Kakali-Banani area from 11:45am.

Students of eight universities located in city’s Uttara area took position on road from 10:15am, halting vehicle movement that causes immense sufferings to commuters.

Earlier on Sunday, they reiterated that their movement is against the government’s decision not the government.

However, North South University and Independent University Bangladesh authorities announced the closure of their respective universities for September 15 and September 26 respectively.
