Dhaka: The ruling Bangladesh Awami League is observing Friday the second anniversary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s release from jail during the political topsy-turvy under the post-1/11 state of emergency.

To mark the day, executive, presidium and advisory panel members of the party will greet the prime minister at her official residence Ganabhaban in the evening.

This day two years back, the AL chief was freed from a specially made sub-jail in the parliament house and she went to the US for emergency medical checkup.

She returned home on November 6 the same year, after a lot of hassles over her homecoming.

After imposing state of emergency on the country on 11 January 2007, the then caretaker government detained Sheikh Hasina on 16 July 2007 and sent to the sub-jail on charges of corruption.

The same was the political nemesis of another ex-PM, Khaleda Zia, the BNP chairperson, as she was also held in the same sub-jail on graft charges amid the crackdown.
