SC stays ban on screening ‘Raza Plaza’

DHAKA: There is no bar to release of Rana Plaza, the movie based on the gruesome accident on April 24 in 2013, as the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order that issued six-month ban on it’s screening.

Four members Appellate Division led by chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha (SK Sinha) passed the order on Sunday.

Attroney General Mahbuey Alam moved for the state while Rukonuddin Mahmud and AM Aminuddin stood for ‘Rana Plaza’ producer Shamim Akter.

On August 24, the HC bench of Justices Naima Haidar and Mostafa Zaman Islam gave six months stay order, in reply to the writ petition filed by the president of National Garments Workers Employees League on August 20.

The court also asked the country's film censor board to explain in four weeks why the clearance certificate for screening the movie should not be cancelled.

Information secretary, Film Sensor Board chairman and film producers were made responders.

Along with this, the court also stayed the effectiveness of Sensor Board’s Certificate for six months.

Film Directer Nazrul Islam Khan made the film ‘Rana Plaza’  where Parimoni and Saiman cast. The movie was schedule to be screened on September 4, but it delayed due to HC ban.

Barristers Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapos and Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury moved for the defence while Deputy Attorney General M Mokhlesur Rahman moved for state.

On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza disaster left 1,135 people dead and thousands more rescued from the ruins of the illegally built complex that housed five factories that supplied garments to international companies.
