DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Monday dismissed a writ petition filed challenging the legality of insertion of Islam in the Constitution as the state religion.
The bench of Justice M Emdadul Haque and Justice M Khurshid Alam Sarker passed the order after hearing the petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer.
Lawyer Samarendra Nath Goswami filed the writ petition in last month. He moved for the petition during the hearing while Additional Attorney General Murad Reza stood for the state.
Law secretary was defendant in the writ petition.
The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution inserted Article 2A, which gave Islam the status of state religion.
Moreover, the Fifteenth Amendment, it has been reinstated in 2011.
According to 2A articles, the state religion of the Republic is Islam, but the State shall ensure equal status and equal right in the practice of the Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and other religions.
