28 jailed for defying fishing ban

CHANDPUR: A mobile court on Sunday sentenced 28 fishermen different terms of imprisonment for catching fish defying ongoing ban.

Of them, 19 got one year’s jail term while nine others were awarded one month’s imprisonment, reports banglanews correspondent.

On Saturday night, the 28 fishermen were detained from Char Bhairabi area of the river Meghna.

Later on Sunday noon, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Udayan Dewan and executive magistrate Kamal M Rashed passed the order at Chandpur coast guard station and marine police outpost.

Chandpur marine police sub-inspector (SI) Mosharraf Hossian told banglanews that all the detainees have been sent to jail.
