DHAKA: Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government will take steps to formulate new Contempt of Court law as soon as possible.
He came up with assertion while addressing a workshop organized by Law Reporters’ Forum at the auditorium of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in city on Sunday.
In his speech as chief guest, the minister said, “We will take initiative to pass a bill on Contempt of Court law soon after consultation with all the stakeholders”.
On February 19, 2013, Jatiya Sangsad passed bill for Contempt of Court law. Later on February 23, a gazette notification was published scraping Contempt of Court law-1926.
On March 25, two lawyers filed a writ petition challenging legality of sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 13(2) of the law.
On September 26, the High Court declared the Contempt of Court law-2013 illegal.
With Forum president M Badiuzzaman in the chair, the workshop was addressed by Supreme Court Lawyers Association secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon, lawyers Ahsanul Karim, journalists Faruk Kazi, Kazi Abdul Hannan, Shahiduzzman and others.
