BANDARBAN: ‘Prabarana Purnima’, one of the largest Buddhist religious festivals, will be celebrated in Bandarban district on Monday.
Marma and Rakhain ethnic communities will mainly celebrate the festival to continue till October 29.
According to the tradition, Buddhist communities celebrate the Purnima after their monsoon rituals as the full moon in month Ashwin signifies the end of the 3-month Lent of Bhikkhus.
Other functions of the festival include the offering of the Buddha Puja in the morning, feeding the monks at noon, illumination of the monastery in the evening by lighting candles.
They also send up ‘fanush’ to the sky as a symbol of light to attain wisdom and enlightment.
