DHAKA: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday (March 8) summoned food minister Md. Qamrul Islam and liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Huq to explain their speeches about the appeal verdict of war crime convict Mir Quasem Ali.
A nine-member full bench of the Appellate Division of SC, led by chief justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha, summoned the ministers to explain their position at 9:00am on March 15.
The court also issued a notice against the ministers asking why it would not bring charges of contempt of court against them.
The court observed the ministers’ speeches that were published and aired in media was audacious and disrespectful to the court.
“The speeches have astounded the justices of the apex court and the court considers these as naked interference in its activities,” the court also observed.
On March 5 (Saturday), food minister Md. Qamrul Islam and liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Huq demanded re-hearing of the appeal filed by war crimes death row convict Mir Quasem Ali after eliminating CJ Surendra Kumar Sinha from the panel.
