DHAKA: The government has given nod to ‘Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare Policy-2015’ with the provisions of leave, entertainment and rest for the domestic workers.
The approval came from a regular meeting of the cabinet held at secretariat on Monday (December 21), with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
After the meeting, cabinet secretary Shafiul Alam briefed the media in this regard.
The Secretary said, ‘According to the labor law of 2006, the provisions of leave, entertainment and resting hours have been adopted in this policy.’
He also said, ‘Domestic workers will receive Maternity Leave for 16 weeks.’
The secretary has asserted that government will make sure about the amenities of the domestic workers. Labor Welfare Foundation will monitor and oversee the matter. The government will play its supportive role. A helpline will be introduced for their support.
“The laborers will no longer be tortured physically or mentally. If they fall victim of torture, trial will be done under the labor law”, the secretary continued.
When queried about the working hours and the wages, the secretary replied that working hours and wages would be decided by negotiation of both parties.
