Doctor dies of suffocation in city fire

DHAKA:  A physician reportedly died of suffocation as a fire broke out at Haji Mansion adjacent to Balaka office in capital’s Motijheel area on Monday (December 21).

According the identity card carried by the dead, he was identified as Professor Dr SM Shahnewaz Deen Tabib, 45, director of pediatric department of Institute of Child Health and Shishu Hospital in Mirpur-2 in Dhaka.
 
Fire service officials whisked off the unconscious man, who went to a bank housed at the building, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said fire service headquarters telephone operator Ziaur Rahman.

On arrival at the hospital, duty doctor declared him dead, said Sentu Chandra Das, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of DMCH police out post.

The fire originated at the high-rise in the city around 11:45am on Monday.

On information, three fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame after half an hour, said fire service control room officer-in-charge (OC) Enayet Hossain.
