DHAKA: Ruling Awami League (AL) candidates won 177 mayoral posts while BNP candidates bagged 22, Awami League rebel candidates 18, Jatiya Party (JP) one and others nine as unofficial results of 227 municipalities of the Wednesday’s polls poured in the newsroom of banglanews.
However, independent candidates won 25 mayoral posts.
Voting in 234 municipalities across the country was held from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Wednesday (December 30) amid sporadic incidents.
The Election Commission (EC) announced the postponement of Madhabdi municipality poll while returning officials concerned postponed the other 31 centers in 13 municipalities.
On allegation of violence, occupying poll centers and 13 mayoral candidates, mostly of BNP, boycotted the election.
As many as 900 candidates vied for mayoral and 1,200 candidates for councilor posts. A total of 19 political parties nominated candidates for mayoral elections.
Some 228 candidates of Awami League (AL), 225 of BNP and 74 of Jatiya Party (JP) contested as mayor candidates. Earlier, seven mayor candidates were elected unopposed.
A grand total of more than 140,000 personnel from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police, Coast Guard and Ansar were engaged on the voting day.
