DHAKA: 2015, a year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2015th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 15th year of the 3rd millennium, the 15th year of the 21st century, and the 6th year of the 2010s decade.
It was an eventful year for Bangladesh. BNP staged an indefinite blockade at the early part of the year. Many people were burnt to death by throwing petrol bombs into vehicles during the blockade.
Besides, road accidents, drowning, electrocution and many other forms of accidents killed many while hajj stampede in Saudi Arabia killed a large number of Bangladeshis at the end of the year. Some of the major incidents are here:
January 31: 13 killed in factory fire in Dhaka
As many as 13 people were burnt to death and several others injured in a fire that broke out at a plastic factory at Mirpur-1 area in the capital on January 31.
Later, a compensation of Tk 20,000 was declared by disaster management and relief ministry for the burn victims and their families. The local MP also announced to provide a financial aid among the injured.
February 3: Petrol bomb attack in a bus killed 7 in Comilla
As many as seven people were burnt to death on the spot and 20 sustained severe burn injuries as ‘blockaders’ threw petrol bomb in a Dhaka-bound bus in Comilla on February 3.
Miabazar police outpost sergeant Nazimuddin said blockaders threw the bomb in the bus at Jogmohon area on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the afternoon.
The bus was burnt completely and fire fighters recovered seven bodies from it.
March 27: Narayanganj stampede kills 10 pilgrims
Ten 10 pilgrims including seven women were killed in a stampede during Astami Snan (ritual bathing) of Hindu community in Langalband under Bandar upazila of Narayanganj district on March 27.
Thousands of Sanatan religion followers perform the ritual at the festival there every year seeking divine blessings.
April 2: 8 killed in Buriganga trawler capsize
Eight people died after a trawler with 80 passengers on board capsized in Buriganga River at Pagla in Narayanganj sadar upazila April 2.
April 15: 11 killed in Rampura house collapse
Eleven people, including three of a family, were killed and scores injured as a tin-shed house collapsed into a swamp at Rampura of Dhaka on April 15.
May 23: 10 killed in Sirajganj road crash
Ten people were killed and 50 others injured in a road accident on Bangbandhu Bridge link road (West) under Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj district on May 23.
June 15: 7 killed in Muktagachha road accident
Seven people were killed and five others injured as a pick-up van collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh district on June 15.
July 10: 27 killed in Zakat stampede in Mymensingh
Twenty seven were trampled to death and four others injured as they went to collect zakat clothes at Nurani Jorda factory in Mymensingh on July 10.
The deputy commissioner (DC) announced to provide an aid of Tk 10,000 to each victim’s family. Religious Affairs minister Motiur Rahman also announced to provide an aid of Tk 10,000 to the family of each victim.
The police, however, detained Nurani Jorda factory owner M Shamim and seven officials of the factory from the spot in this regard. The government also formed two probe committees to investigate the incident.
July 19: 16 killed as 2 buses collide in Sirajganj
Sixteen people were killed and dozens injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Sirajganj sadar upazila on July 19.
Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Billal Hossain formed a four-member committee, headed by additional district magistrate Kamrul Hasan, to investigate into the accident.
DC Billal Hossain also announced to pay Tk 10,000 each will be given to deceased’s family member while injured will get Tk 5,000 each.
July 23: 8 killed in Gazipur accident
Eight people, including three children, were killed as a train knocked a passenger carrying CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Gazipur on July 23.
September 26: 7 killed in Gopalganj road crash
Seven people, including six of a family, were killed as a microbus and an auto-rickshaw collided head-on in Gopalganj district September 26.
October 3: Habiganj road crash death toll 7
Seven people were killed and 16 others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj on October 3.
October 18: 137 Bangladeshi pilgrims killed in Mina tragedy
As many as 137 Bangladeshi pilgrims were killed in Mina stampede in Saudi Arabia during hajj.
State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam made the disclosure at a press conference at foreign ministry on October 18.
Besides, scores of injured Bangladeshi pilgrims took treatment in several hospitals in Saudi Arabia.
October 26: 7 killed in train crash in Jamalpur
Seven people, including three members of a family, were killed and one injured as a train hit an auto-rickshaw carrying them in Melandah uapzila of Jamalpur district on October 26.
November 7: Mymensingh bus plunge kills 7
The death toll from a bus crash in Bhaluka on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway rose to seven while 10 other passengers sustained injuries.
