17 killed in road accidents across country

DHAKA: At least 17 people were killed and another 45 injured in fatal road accidents in eight districts Tuesday, amid a pre-eid rush.

In Sirajganj, a recklessly driven truck crashed into a car on the highway on the western side of Bangabandhu bridge Tuesday, leaving five people dead--four of them members of a family and the other one their driver.

Four of the deceased were identified as Abdus Salam, 45, a businessman from Sujanagar in Pabna, his wife Farhana Begum, 40, and their daughter Promi, 12, a class-six student of Siddeswari High School in the capital, and driver Babu, 25.

Kodda outpost police sergeant Saiful Islam told banglanews24.com.bd that a Bogra-bound truck from Dhaka rammed a Dhaka-bound private car from Pabna at about 12 noon, killing five in the car on the spot.

“The businessman’s son, aged about 2/3, was first rushed to Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital in critical condition. He was then sent to Dhaka CMH as his condition deteriorated,” said the sergeant, quoting doctors.        

In Sylhet, a triangular collision among a bus, a truck and a private car at Goalbazar in Osmaninagar left four people dead at noon in another grim family tragedy.

The deceased are-car driver Jahangir Alam, 20, car owner Mainul Chowdhury, 38, his mother Kaisar Bibi, 70, and Mainul’s brother Mobashsher Chowdhury of Aushkandi in Nabiganj upazila.

Mymensingh correspondent of banglanews adds : Two motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their bike in Bhaluka upazila at noon.

The dead are Khorshed Alam, 35, and retired army personnel Abdul Hamid, 50.

In Comilla :  A bus knocked down a pickup van on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Chandina Harikola Majar crossing at noon, killing the driver and helper of the van instantly.

Identity of the deceased could not be known.

Rangpur correspondent reports a farmer, Anis Mandal, 40, was killed in a road mishap at Damdama on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway at noon.

In Dinajpur, Rehana Begum, wife of Bablu of Jhinor, sustained severe injuries as a tempo hit her in Birol upazila in the morning. She died at a local hospital later on.

In Thakurgaon, a bicycle rider was killed as a power tiller hit him at Bhaolarhat in Sadar upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Zahirul Islam, 20, son of Abdul Jabbar of Padampur village in Sadar upazila.

In Jessore, a head-on collision between two buses on the Jessore-Magura road left one dead and 40 injured.

The dead was identified as Rabbi, 30, the driver of one of the buses. The injured were sent to Jessore General Hospital and Local clinics.
