DHAKA: A diploma engineer has been run in Dhaka from a northern backwoods for his alleged involvement in engineering e-mail threats to the government and law enforcers for the release of the top Jamaat leaders, now facing war crimes trial.
The arrested person was identified as Maruf Raihan, 30, a diploma civil engineer, said DMP commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque at a press conference at DB police office on Tuesday morning.
On secret information, a team led by Assistant Commissioner of DB police no-2 Mohammad Golam Azad Khan arrested him, the press conference was told.
An anonymous cyber-warrior emailed a threat that important establishments would be blown up in serial attacks if the detained four top Jamaat-e-Islami leaders are not set free before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Police started looking for the senders of the e-mail after filing a general diary with Ramna thana in this connection. The team raided a house of Babupara Saddam intersection area under Syedpur thana in Nilphamari, identifying the e-mailer in preliminary investigation, and arrested Maruf with computer accessories.
On interrogation, Maruf admitted to having done it. He said that he had sent the e-mail to the Information Ministry’s e-mail address. Maruf passed the Diploma degree from Dinajpur Polytechnic in 1999, said sources.
The DMP commissioner said four more e-mail threats were found after checking Maruf’s e-mail ID.
