Road crashes kill 4, injure 75

DHAKA: At least four people were killed and 75 others injured in separate road accidents in Manikganj and Savar Wednesday.

A correspondent from Manikganj reports: One woman was killed and 40 others injured when a passenger bus fell into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Muljan area in the District on Wednesday morning.

The identity of the victim could not be known immediately while among the injured, four were rushed to Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital in critical condition.

Police and locals said a Dhaka-bound bus of “eagle” paribahan fell into a roadside ditch in Muljan area at about 6am as another bus of “SK” paribahan hit it from behind, leaving one woman dead on the spot and injured 40 others.

Our correspondent from Savar says: At least two people were killed and 35 others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Sutipara under Dhamrai Thana in the district on Wednesday morning.

The identity of the victims could not be known immediately. But, locals said one body was taken to Manikganj and another to Gazipur.

Officer-in-charge of Dhamrai police station Alamgir Hossain said, “The injured were rushed to different hospitals.”

Witnesses said the accident occurred at around 5am when the driver of a Dhaka-bound passenger bus lost its control over the steering. The bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a tree beside the road in Sutipara, leaving two people dead on the spot and injured 35 others.

On information, police rushed to the spot and seized the bus, said sub inspector of Dhamrai police station Abul Bashar.

Savar correspondent adds: One person was killed on Dhaka-Aricha highway as a speedy bus rammed him down at about 9:30am.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Baten, 42, son of Abdul Motaleb, resident of village manik nagar in Amin Bazaar. He was a local trader.

Witnesses said a speedy bus of “Titus” paribahan rammed Baten down in Amin Bazaar area while he was crossing the road at 9:30 am.

Agitated locals torched the bus after the incident. However, the driver managed to flee the scene, said officer-in-charge of Savar police station Mahbub-Ur-Rahman.
Angry mob put up barricades on the road, disrupting traffic for one hour.

On information, police rushed to the spot and quelled the situation, said police.
