Dhaka: Journalists, cutting across the divide along their apparent political lines, staged a solidarity rally in front of the Central Shahid Minar Saturday to press their demand for immediate resumption of the embroiled Jamuna TV channel’s operation.

They said government “interference in the news media” never brings good in establishing democracy.

“Government should address the problem, if any, in other ways as shutting down the television channel cannot be a solution,” the rally was told by the speakers.

They hoped that the government would take proper initiative to ensure the welfare of the newsmen, officials and employees of the television channel.

Shah Alamgir, director (News) of the Jamuna TV, presided over the solidarity assembly.

Leading journalists Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Ishtiaq Reza, media personnel Mohammad Jahangir, National Press Club president Shawkat Mahmud, president of their faction of BFUJ Ruhul Amin Gazi and DUJ general secretary Baker Hossain, among others, spoke at the meet.
