DU Prof Mizan made NHRC Chairman

One fulltime, 5 honorary members also appointed

DHAKA: Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman of Dhaka University’s Law Department has been made Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), giving the much-waited full shape to the HR watchdog.

“President Zillur Rahman Tuesday gave the appointment to the Chairman, a fulltime and five honorary members under provision of section 6 (1) of the National Human Rights Commission Law 2009,” says an official announcement.

Kazi Reazul Haque, Executive Director of Legal Education and Training Institute, has been appointed fulltime member of the commission.

The honorary members are: Lawyer of the High Court Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court Fouzia Karim Firoz, professor Dr. Giasuddin Mollah of Political Science, DU, Executive Director of Prip Trust Arma Dutta, prose-writer Selina Hossain, Executive Director of Faria Lara Foundation and former Director of Research, Compile & Folk Culture Dept of Bangla Academy, and former DU professor Niru Kumar Chakma, also a former member of the NHRC.

Dr. Mizanur Rahman will get salary, allowances and other facilities like a judge of the Appellate Division of the SC and Kazi Reazul Haque as a judge of the HC division.

Honorary members will draw their honorarium as fixed by the Commission.
