Journalist Peer Habibur Rahman laid to eternal rest

Eminent journalist Peer Habibur Rahman, the executive editor of the Bangladesh Pratidin, was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Maizbari village in Sadar upazila of Sunamganj on Monday.

He was buried by his parents’ graves at 4:20pm following two janazas – one at Sunamganj Central Mosque after Zohr prayers and another at his village home.

Earlier, people paid their last homage to Peer Habib placing wreaths on his coffin before the janaza.

At 11:30 am, the mortal remains of the noted columnist reached Sunamganj Municipal Premises where representatives of different political parties, and social, cultural and professional organisations paid their last respect to him.

Peer Habib’s body was then taken to the Sunamganj Central Eidgah Maidan where his 5th namaz-e-janaza was held.

Lawmaker of Sunamganj-5 constituency Muhibur Rahman Manik, Peer Habib’s younger brother and lawmaker of Sunamganj-4 Peer Fazlur Rahman Misbah, Sunamganj Zila Parishad chairman Nurul Huda Mukut, and Sunamganj municipality mayor Nader Bakhat along with several thousands of people took part in the janaza.

People from cross section of the society went to Peer Bari at Hasan Nagar area of ​​the city from morning to express their grief and sympathy.

Peer Habibur Rahman passed away at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Labaid Hospital in the capital on Saturday. He was 58.

Peer Habib left behind wife, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives, colleagues and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Earlier on Friday evening, he suffered a stroke while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and was later shifted to the ICU of Labaid Hospital.

On Sunday, people from all walks of life paid their last tributes to Peer Habibur Rahman at the central Shaheed Minar by placing wreaths.

Meanwhile, a janaza of Peer Habibur was held on the Jatiya Press Club premises after Zohr prayers. Later, the mortal remains was taken to Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) where another janaza was held.

Later in the day, the body of Peer Habib was taken to his workplace at Bangladesh Pratidin on the premises of East West Media Group Complex.

Prominent journalist, political analyst and columnist, Peer Habib conquered cancer through bone marrow transplant at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai of India in October last year.

On January 22, he got infected with Covid-19 and recovered from the virus. However, he was admitted to BSMMU as he had been suffering from different health issues like kidney disease.

President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the noted journalist.

In separate condolence messages, they prayed for eternal peace of Peer Habib and conveyed their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Born in Sunamganj town on February 16, 1964, Peer Habib obtained higher education from Rajshahi University. He started journalism when he was a student of the public university in 1984.

He worked for many newspapers during his long journalism career. He also worked in the daily Bangla Bazar, Jugantor, Manobkantha, Amader Shomoy. He was also the founder of online news portal purboposhchimbd.news.
