A police officer was killed and eight others were injured as a pickup van overturned at Rajnagar upazila in Moulvibazar district early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Somiron Chandra Das, a sub-inspector (SI) of Rajnagar Police Station.

Ziaur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Moulvibazar Police Sadar Circle, confirmed the matter to Banglanews. 

According to him, a pickup van, carrying policemen, turned turtle on the Sylhet-Moulvibazar regional highway in Moinar Dokan area at around 5:00 am while returning the police station after nabbing three accused.

Nine people were injured in the accident.

Police and fire service personnel rescued the injured and took them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Somiron dead.

SI Showkat Masud Bhuiyan, constable Masuk, driver Aziz and accused Laxmann Shaotal were referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College in critical condition while SI Solaiman, ASI Jahangir and; accused Kanto Shaotal and Moina Miah are receiving treatment at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, Ziaur Rahman added.
