FENI: A “smuggler” was killed and another pedestrian injured as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel opened fire in Adalat Math area in Chhagalnaiya upazila under the district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Mia, 52, hailed from Motua area of Chagalnaiya municipality.

Witness said two BGB personnel chased a suspected wood laden truck on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 3:00pm and opened fire as the truck driver didn’t respond to alert signal of scrutiny, leaving two smugglers injured critically.

The injured were rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital where Mia died.

However, local businessmen claimed Mia was a businessman and blockaded Dhaka-Chittagong highway for hours protesting the incident.

But Feni-4 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Khaled Mahmud denied the allegation and said smugglers tried to chop BGB personnel during chase. In response, BGB shot and one smuggler died.
